What is coal-fired boiler?

The coal-fired boiler is an industrial or utility boiler. It generates thermal energy from burning of coal.

Working of coal-fired boiler

Electricity is produced by burning coal in a boiler to produce steam. The steam so generated under high-pressure flows into the turbine which rolls the generator to create electricity. Then, the steam is cooled and condensed back into water and moves back to the boiler to start the process over.

Types of coal-fired boiler

Industrial coal-fired boilers are mostly run on crushed coal. There are also gas-fired boilers which are run on natural gas. That natural gas is a mixture of methane, ethane, butane, pentane, or propane.

Mechanism of coal-fired boiler

The basic idea of a firing system using crushed coal is to use the entire volume of the furnace for combustion. Coal is broken to the sizes of a fine grain, mixed with air and burned in the flue gas flow. Biomass and other materials can be mixed in to this. Coal contains minerals which are converted to ash during combustion and is removed later on.

Working condition of coal-fired boilers

Coal-fired boilers operate in subcritical or supercritical conditions. When the boiler pressure goes above the critical pressure of 22.12 MPa and the corresponding saturation temperature of 374 °C, the mixtures of water and steam will be replaced by a single supercritical fluid.

Coal-fired boiler efficiency

The boiler efficiency is mainly related to the amount of losses in the system. In high capacity coal fired boilers, the total losses are to be around 12 to 14%. Of course, 50% of losses are governed by fuel properties such as hydrogen in fuel, moisture in fuel and ambient air conditions.
